Seven-year-old Liam dialed 911 for the first time in his life, his fingers trembling. He stood in the middle of the hallway, the phone pressed to his ear, listening to his sister’s muffled sobs behind the closed door.
The stepfather was home alone with the kids — their mother had been delayed at work. Liam had always thought his stepfather was strict, but that day he heard something that truly frightened him.

Mia, crying, tried to explain:
“He… he didn’t touch me! I fell… off the bed… I broke my leg! He was trying to help me!”
But her voice was nearly drowned out by the panic. Only a few minutes later, when one of the officers noticed the unnatural angle of her leg and the ambulance — already called by the stepfather — arrived, the truth finally began to come together.
The paramedics confirmed that Mia had indeed suffered a severe fracture, and the stepfather had been trying the entire time to ease her pain and wait for the delayed medical team, overwhelmed by a surge of emergency calls.
